Asthma Treatment for Babies

Asthma in a baby or toddler can be frightening. We understand that and take the greatest of care in monitoring and treating your child. As certified asthma educators, we educate parents, in a way they understand, to improve the entire family’s quality of life.

SYMPTOMS

Children under 5 who have asthma will often have these common symptoms:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Troubled breathing
  • Uncomfortable tightness in their chest
  • Recurring issues with bronchitis

While some children may exhibit signs daily, some show periodic attacks. These may often be tied to the presence of allergic “triggers.” Other signs of asthma may vary by age:

  • Infants my show difficulty breathing during feedings.
  • Children may show decreased play activity and trouble breathing.
  • Children may also take longer than normal to recover from colds.

ASTHMA MEDICATIONS FOR BABIES OR TODDLERS

We are frequently asked about medication for Babies or toddlers. Most of the medication used is the same as older children and adults. However, the dosage is lower and the way the medication is given is different. So it is important that you work with an asthma doctor.

Medications to treat asthma symptoms in infants and toddlers are usually given in a flavored liquid form or with a nebulizer. A nebulizer is a small machine that uses forced air to create a medicated mist for the baby to breathe in through a small face mask. These treatments take about 10 minutes and are administered several times a day until symptoms decrease.

TREATMENT PLANS

The most important aspect of managing your child’s asthma treatment is to form a strong relationship with your asthma doctor. Having a partner that can educate you on how asthma affects your child is important to improving quality of life for your whole family.
